You cannot please everyone
November 25th, 2007
Today, someone has unsubscribed from my RSS feed and I felt miserably. While it is clear to me that he (she) has subscribed to my RSS to read my great blogging article
, and he (she) was disappointed that I was published some other subjects either, like photos, personal, music …, I can’t help myself to feel bad. First, when I saw the unsubscribe email, I got panic. My brain began to work hard, trying to find some great, unique subject about blogging, so that all my readers to be pleased. Then I realized that is a stupid idea. I cannot write every day great, unique posts about blogging. In my opinion, I didn’t write such a post until now either. I don’t want to write every day about blogging. If everyone blogs about blogging, all the blogging subjects should be pretty quick covered. I’ve already found many posts on many blogs about the same subjects, with different words. After I read 2-3 posts about the same subject, I skip the other “matching” posts. I like to read about different subjects, and I like to write about different subjects. Of course I like the blogging posts either, of course I like to make some money with my blog, because I’m not that kind of dreaming girl. But I’m not stick in this either. I consider that there are many bloggers who write about blogging better than I am. And they do it better than I do. I still would write about blogging. In fact, from my “brain storm” on this morning came to me some pretty ideas. But I don’t get stick in blogging. That’s for sure. And I’m sure that I cannot please everyone.
So, I’m asking you: How do you feel when someone unsubscribes from your RSS? What do you do in this case?
If you liked this post, please consider to subscribe to my RSS feed.
If you want to receive new posts directly to your inbox, you can subscribe by Email.

I don’t do anything, because as you said, you cannot please everybody. People come and go, and what\is important is more of them to come than to go away. However, I’ve got one subscriber who wrote me his reasons for unsubscribing: those were technical issues, which I solved afterwards, so no further readers will unsubscribe because of those annoying bugs.

You have absolutely right. It’s more important that there are more subscribers than unsubscribers. Though, I cannot help myself to feel pretty bad when someone unsubscribe from my RSS.
I don’t even keep an eye on the number of my subscribers. Not yet, anyways. Maybe I’ll care more if I ever get to monetize my blog.
It has been a norm for me to see my number of RSS subscribers going up and down. In a way, it is good since I will know what my readers like and what they don’t.
You are correct that you can’t please everyone but if you are lucky to strike a point where most of the people likes, your articles will create a viral effect.

One, I know my interests change and I subscribe and unsubscribe for many reasons not related to the blog or its contents.
Two, as mentioned, it is the net change that is important.
Three, I would guess the most common reason for an unsubscribe is changing of address.

@Lalla Mira: this is a bad habit what I have: to check my subscribers every day
@Wayne Liew: You are right, and from this point of view it seems that niche blogs are the best. But this doesn’t transform personal blogs into a niche blogs? Of course, my blog isn’t so personal, though I like to talk about a lot of subjects. And I don’t want to make 13 niche blogs from it
@Michael Shepherd: Well, I didn’t think about your 3rd point
I suppose its quite normal, even though I’m a new blogger as well, my rss subscribers jump up and down a lot as well, especially after a major stumble/bumpzee. At first I panicked when I saw my subscribers go down but then after a few times, I just didn’t really care
I’m not making much $$ off my blog and I doubt I will anytime soon, its just there cause I can.

I’m not aware of when people subscribe or unsubscribe to my feed…
I know not all posts will please all people, but if some posts please some people some of the time then it’s ok..
I’m pretty used to it by now. I have 13 one day and 4 the next. I really don’t understand it at all.

A busy week (and some link loves)!…
The past week had been quite a busy week for me with a lot of different stuff.
J was going diving in Cebu so I stayed up very late for a couple of nights, helping him with his final edits. He submitted the final draft of his thesis to his Supervisor ju…
Of course I feel a bit disappointed when I see some one unsubscribed or the number of my feed subscriber is decreasing but this won’t stop me to blog for things that I want to blog…people interest can change and human are really unpredictable…they like it for a moment, they many not like it later on…so like pelf said, cheer up…

I used to monitor feed subscription numbers really closely but now, I take a look at it at the end of the week, I couldn’t stand the ‘oh noes’ that happened if I checked it every day and saw the numbers go down!
Best thing to do for me is to blog about what I blog about normally, if people subscribe it’s because my normal blogging is good enough and I don’t have to worry myself about finding the ‘hot’ things to write about..
